With the change of season from summer to fall comes a decrease in temperatures, but you may not be quite ready to give up spending time outside. If you enjoy fall activities and the overall feeling of the season you might consider getting an outdoor fireplace. If you already have one this is the perfect time of year to use it.

To make sure your fire pit or fireplace remains in good condition and lasts for years to come it is important to take care of it. Most don't require that much maintenance but a little care can go a long way.

If you have a wood burning fire pit it is good to remove the ashes a day or so after using it. This way you won't find ashes blown all over your yard plus it will be clean and ready to use again.

Using a fire pit or fireplace cover is a good way to help protect it. This is especially important if you know you won't be using it for a while. If you have a portable unit you may want to store it in a shed or garage if it will be too cold to use it during the winter months.

Some models will need to be painted occasionally or touched up so they won't rust. You should be able to find a suitable paint at a local store; just ask an associate for fireplace paint that can withstand the high temperatures.

Always keep an extinguisher or sand handy in case you need help extinguishing the fire. Be sure the fire is completely out before you leave it. Be conscious of your surroundings and never place it too close to the house, on a wooden surface or near trees or brush. Consider the safety of children or pets that will be near the fire as well.
